The male werewolves express dominance in situations just like a dominant animal would. Taking a modern day story and adding in not just vampires and werewolves, but coyotes, witches, and all sorts of other fae is no small accomplishment. A mechanic in a small city in the northwest, she lives alone and won't allow herself to be submissive.
I do like Mercy as a character and I hear that the series gets better. I will definitely give #2 a try. It dragged on a bit in spots and it felt exciting at times and then dull at times. Fascinating. When I love a story, I become rather addicted and I never became addicted to this one.
She breaks the rules when she needs to and she is passionate about those around her - she'd do anything for those that she cares about. The author weaves these animal-like traits into the story so that they seems so very human (such as two boys that both like the same girl). Mercy Thompson is an incredibly strong and seemingly fearless character. When it comes to a female, the male werewolves also express possession, just as a werewolf or any animal in the dog family really would.
The werewolves and Mercy (the coyote) can smell things like fear and lust. She inwardly criticizes her werewolf friends because the pack's rules are so anti-feminine and antiquated. What amazes me most about this story is the author's ability to realistically give the characters animal-like abilities while in human form.
The writing is simple, the story isn't intriguing, and the characters are one-dimensional. This series is NOT what it's cracked up to be. I am shocked at all of the positive reviews, because nothing about this book is good. I picked up the Mercy Thompson series on the recommendation of a friend. Do not waste your time on this book. "Moon Called" was so terrible that I didn't even finish. After reading the "Twilight" series, I was looking for a new supernatural/fantasy series, but boy was I disappointed. I read the first few chapters and couldn't bring myself to continue.
Mercy is a tough chick, but she has a vulnerable side, which makes her all the more believable. There were even a few times I cried. I have read the first three books in this series, and love them all. These novels have lots of great plot twists and wtf moments. Great series, well worth the money. Mrs. Briggs writes wonderfully.
I must admit, the cover got me. Overall, this book was just dull. I read Twighlight & Sookie Stackhouse. I was hoping this book would be just as interesting.
But in Moon Called, the characters' actions and relationships with eachother seemed natural and relatable, even though they're werewolves, vampires, fae, etc. I won't go into detail about the story b/c plenty of other reviewers have, but with this genre I sometimes find the action moves along artificially, which authors can get away with because the world is a made-up one. It added a lot to the overall story & kept me caring about what happened. I stumbled upon this book after reading a few of the Kitty books (which I couldn't get in to). The main character, Mercy, is really well-developed and likable, as are most of the book's chraracters, and the story is interesting and moves well.
